Abstract

The Missing Men does not belong to a defined geographical region but instead occupies a conceptual space within the broader masculine world. It transcends hierarchical structures based on father-son relationships and instead explores a horizontal realm where figures like the Munshi, the Genie of the Lamp, or Borat exist.

This project draws attention to postcolonial masculinities, which examine how masculine identities are shaped, contested, and reimagined in the aftermath of colonial rule. Colonial histories often imposed Western ideals of manhood—portraying colonized men as “inferior” or “feminized” to justify domination. By dismantling these colonial stereotypes and viewing masculinity through a subjective, “non-Oriental” lens, the project critiques hegemonic masculinity and opens pathways for diversity and inclusivity.

Postcolonial masculinities challenge the globalized ideals rooted in colonial narratives, emphasizing the fluid and dynamic nature of masculinity. They aim to celebrate and reclaim subordinated masculinities that were marginalized through myths, legends, and systemic misrepresentations. By creating a platform for these alternative narratives, The Missing Men fosters a greater understanding of how history, race, and power intersect in shaping the diverse identities of men across cultures.
