Abstract

The exhibition was curated with the dual purpose of promoting gender inclusivity and showcasing diverse styles, firmly grounded in the principles of curatorial activism. This approach aimed to challenge societal norms and amplify marginalized voices through intentional and impactful representation. Bambai Nazariya, an everyday chai house located in the Andheri suburb of western Mumbai, was deliberately chosen as the venue because of its alignment with these ideals. Typically, a space for casual gatherings, the chai house was transformed into a gallery of queer fashion photography, blending its warm, familiar atmosphere with the bold expression of the exhibition. Staffed predominantly by transgender women, the establishment is owned by Diego Miranda, who explained the significance of the slogan “Nazariya Badlo, Nazaara Badlega”, displayed prominently at the entrance. This call to shift perspectives and foster inclusivity became central to the exhibition’s message, encapsulating the idea that “changing attitudes can change the world.” By employing curatorial activism, the exhibition was designed not only to represent diversity but also to inspire societal change, bridging divides and promoting inclusivity.

In Mumbai, this reimagined space evolved into a vibrant cultural gathering. A selection of fashion images was presented, encouraging members of the queer community to engage in discussions and share reflections while enjoying Kashmiri chai. The exhibition embodied curatorial activism by connecting diverse queer communities within a space that showcased inclusivity, style, and the transformative power of reimagining everyday environments for art and advocacy.
