Abstract

The concept of Die Ruggenmutter bridges mythology, spirituality, and contemporary thought, presenting a compelling narrative that redefines traditional feminine archetypes. Inspired by the spiritual dimension of mysterium tremendum, which evokes awe and reverence, the project draws on mythological parallels, such as the Greek goddess Demetra and the Lithuanian spirit rugiu boba, both emblematic of fertility, harvest, and the rhythms of nature. Reimagined for the modern era, Die Ruggenmutter embodies not just the nurturing essence of a harvest deity but also the strength, complexity, and autonomy of the contemporary woman. She is portrayed as a guardian of tradition and an agent of transformation, unsettling yet deeply resonant—a multifaceted reflection of modern femininity that balances rootedness with empowerment. Through a deconstructivist approach to design, the project revisits the familiar aesthetics of harvest festivals, breaking down traditional elements of clothing and reconstructing them into innovative forms. By reworking volumes, proportions, and garment construction, the collection focuses on individuality and personal identity, moving beyond standardized notions of femininity. Die Ruggenmutter thus becomes a powerful emblem of the evolving role of women, a synthesis of historical reverence and forward-thinking individuality that resonates deeply with contemporary culture.
